Neuroleptic
Action And Clinical Pharmacology: Methotrimeprazine possesses antipsychotic, tranquilizing, anxiolytic, sedative and analgesic properties and it is also a potent potentiator of anesthetics.
Methotrimeprazine possesses strong sedative properties. It potentiates ether and hexobarbital anesthesia as well as morphine analgesia. It also exerts a potent anti-apomorphine effect, a hypothermic action 3 times more potent than that of chlorpromazine and strong antispasmodic and anti-histaminic effects. Methotrimeprazine is capable of reversing epinephrine-induced hypertension but has practically no effect against norepinephrine and acetylcholine. It readily protects rats against traumatic shock and produces deep local anesthesia following parasciatic injections.
Indications And Clinical Uses: Psychotic disturbances: acute and chronic schizophrenias, senile psychoses, manic-depressive syndromes.
Conditions associated with anxiety and tension: autonomic disturbances, personality disturbances, emotional troubles secondary to such physical conditions as resistant pruritus, etc.

Pharmaceutical compound
Levomepromazine, also known as methotrimeprazine, is a phenothiazineneurolepticdrug. Brand names include Nozinan, Levoprome, Detenler, Hirnamin, Levotomin and Neurocil. It is a low-potency antipsychotic (approximately half as potent as chlorpromazine) with strong analgesic, hypnotic and antiemetic properties that are primarily used in palliative care.[2][3]
Serious side effects include tardive dyskinesia, akathisia, abnormalities in the electrical cycle of the heart, low blood pressure and the potentially fatal neuroleptic malignant syndrome.[2][3]
As is typical of phenothiazine antipsychotics, levomepromazine is a "dirty drug", that is, it exerts its effects by blocking a variety of receptors, including adrenergic receptors, dopamine receptors, histamine receptors, muscarinic acetylcholine receptors and serotonin receptors.[2][3]
Medical uses
[edit]It can be used as an analgesic for moderate to severe pain in non-ambulant patients (the latter being because of its strong sedative effects).[4]

Levomepromazine is sometimes given as an injection to people who are terminally ill to help ease distressing symptoms such as pain, feeling sick (nausea), restlessness, and confusion. It works on the balance of chemical substances acting in the brain. If you (or a family member) have been prescribed levomepromazine for this reason, your specialist or home-care team will be able to give you more information about the treatment.
Levomepromazine is also prescribed to relieve symptoms of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental health problem which affects your thoughts, feelings or behaviours. Symptoms of schizophrenia include hearing, seeing, or sensing things that are not real, having mistaken beliefs, and feeling unusually suspicious. The rest of this document provides information about levomepromazine when it has been prescribed for schizophrenia.
